School News Update

Information about last day for students, InstantAlert communication system and construction update

April 30, 2008

Dear MG residents,

Hopefully, bad weather days are behind us with the need to cancel school and plan additional days to the school calendar. Currently, the last day for Park Avenue and Mount Gilead Middle School students is Friday, June 6th and the last day for Mount Gilead High School students is Monday, June 9th. Remember that we cancelled school for only the high school students on December 18, 2007 due to the necessary boiler repairs in building #2. Fog may still be an issue in the mornings, so watch and listen to the television or radio stations on foggy mornings.

Next year, our school will utilize the Instant Alert system from Honeywell, Inc. to provide instant communication to parents regarding school delays or closings, changes in extra-curricular schedules and urgent messages. Parents can log-on through a web-site registration and have messages sent to multiple telephone numbers. We consider this another important form of communication to parents. More information will be provided to parents as we prepare to implement the Instant Alert system for next year.

Construction Update: Work will begin with the renovation of the primary building at Park Avenue Elementary this summer. An additional four classrooms will be added to the west end of primary building. Soon thereafter, renovation and construction will begin at the high school site with the renovation and construction of new classrooms in building #2 and proceeding to the Music Department, Phy. Ed. and interior classrooms (building #4), continuing clock-wise around the site with a new Central Kitchen and finishing with the construction/renovation in building #1. In all, the next two years will be very busy in completing the OSFC project for a quality Middle School/High School facility! We are excited about the opportunity to improve our school site for the community.

Sincerely,

Robert P. Alexander

Superintendent

Recognition of Teams

1985 Boys Baseball Team – During the 1985 baseball season, the Mount Gilead Indians traveled a great deal in compiling a 22-6-1 season record. After winning the MOC and Sectional titles, the team captured the Central District Championship at Cooper Stadium in Columbus. Coach Chris Kubbs attributed the team’s overall success to good teamwork and outstanding individual play by Mike Cook, William Stump, and Rollie Thill who were named to the All Central District Class A and All-League MOC teams. In addition to these team honors, Tom Cooper, Joey Jones, Denny Noble, and Mark Wiseman earned Honorable Mention All-League MOC. Pitcher Rollie Thill’s 14-0 and 2 saves, and outfielder Mike Cook’s 11 home runs for the season set two new Mount Gilead School records.
