On the evening of March 22nd, the gym at Park Avenue Elementary was filled with women and girls learning to defend themselves.
The Park Avenue ROX (Ruling Our eXperiences) group led teachers, students, and community members through a series of self-defense exercises. Ladies who attended learned to be aware of their surroundings, listen to their intuition, speak with assertiveness, take a defensive stance, and fight their way out of dangerous situations. The next day, ROX group members that attended then shared their knowledge about self-defense skills with the ROX girls who were unable to attend.
ROX is a group that encourages young women to be confident, be assertive, and be empowered through weekly lessons on topics such as self-esteem, social media, relationships, and careers. This new, grant funded program is currently being pilited in the elementary. The hope is to eventually expand the program to the middle school and high school. We are hoping to build this program ro teach as many young women as possible, and give them the tools and confidence they need to suceed in our modern society.
